The Belgian military cemetery of Adinkerke is located on the Heldenweg in Adinkerke. It is located in the extension of the civil cemetery, close to the St. Audomarus Church.
Cemetery
This Belgian military cemetery was created at the beginning of WWI as an extension of the existing cemetery. Many soldiers who died in the nearby medical facilities such as the Belgian military hospital Cabour in Adinkerke and the Rodekruis hospital L'Océan in De Panne are buried here. But many soldiers who died in other sectors on the Iron Front were also buried here. There are about 1650 Belgian graves in the cemetery. There are also 2 British beds.
In 1925, the construction of the Heldenweg caused a heavy protest. Indeed, by order of the then Minister of National Defence, some 140 heroic tributes were crushed and mixed with red brick, which served as a foundation for the road. This desecration would be the direct reason for the erection of the IJzertoren (Iron Tower) in Diksmuide. There are still 6 heroic tributes in the military cemetery.
