On his first visit to Belgium, American artist Matt Mullican became so fascinated by the coastal tram and the 67-kilometre-long tram line along the coast that he used it as inspiration for this work.

What is 'Twin Stations'?
Twin Stations is a series of 15 cast iron plates with strange symbols and signs reminiscent of pictograms. The artist strives not only to create order in the world, but also in his oeuvre. That is why he often uses pictograms, such as those used in railway stations and airports. He simplifies everything, omits details. With this, he wants to create order in chaos. You can find the plates at the old tram depot, where they really come to life.
Did you knew that:
- the symbols Mullican uses in his art are reminiscent of the icons and pictograms on the screens of our smartphones. This gives his work a truly 'visionary' dimension.
- many of his works are created when he is under hypnosis? In his own subconscious, he often investigates patterns and how to break them.
