A life-size bronze red deer is on display at the Vijvers Markey in Adinkerke. The sculpture was made by Stief DeSmet, whose work often balances on the edge of where nature meets culture.

What is 'Monument for Cervus Vitalis #2'?
A deer that has been cut into pieces, with certain parts removed and even branches growing out of its body. The sculpture, which is divided into pieces, symbolises the human urge to want to tame wild nature. DeSmet found inspiration in the garden statues he saw in Flemish gardens. His imperfect deer sculpture resists the rigid design of parks. The reflection of the polished parts makes his sculpture blend seamlessly into its surroundings and removes the artificial boundary between humans and their surroundings.
Did you knew that:
- Stief DeSmet's docking of his sculptures refers to his big love; the art of Greek sculptures. Greek sculptures, as we know them today, are usually damaged or missing a limb. It leaves an air of mystery to the viewer. He finds a crack or something damaged much more interesting than the hyper-polished.
