The 22 km long Moeren route starts at the centuries-old farmstead 't Groot Moerhof. The route will take you through the characteristic coastal and polder landscape of the Westhoek on the Belgian-French border. Central to the route are De Moeren, which are spread over two countries, 1/3rd in Belgium and 2/3rd in France. The flat polder landscape of De Moeren is the lowest in Belgium. The 3200 ha agricultural area used to be a vast freshwater lake and marshland. In the 17th century, De Moeren was drained by means of 20 windmills that lifted the water from the low polder and discharged it into the Ringslot. The landscape is still characterised by large rectangular plots and a rectilinear pattern of canals and roads. Following the route, you will also pass two old mills. The route was designed by the Flemish Land Agency and is part of the land development project De Moeren. More information can be found a www.vlm.be. The route is signposted with hexagonal signs.
