Wat de zee bewaart - Expo Johan Tahon
In November 1943, the fishing boat N141 ‘De Zee’ disappears in the North Sea after striking a German sea mine. The crew is never found. Among them, the great-grandfather of artist Johan Tahon remains forever beneath the surface, carried by the slow breath of the sea.
With ‘Wat de Zee Bewaart’, Johan Tahon returns to this history and to his roots in De Panne and Adinkerke. From this deeply personal starting point emerges a compelling exhibition about how the sea remembers, preserves and transforms. Sculptures in clay, plaster, bronze, salt and sand move between body and water, between presence and disappearance. The sea unfolds as a living archive of matter and soul.
Step into a journey from darkness to light, from loss to stillness — a quiet, contemplative experience where art and heritage meet. ‘Wat de Zee Bewaart’ is a tribute to the silence beneath the waves and to what endures, even when it seems to be gone.
