Oosthoek walking route
The Oosthoekduinen form an 80-hectare area of dunes and woodland, where dry moss dunes and dune grasslands set the scene. Let yourself be surprised by the lovely interludes of songbirds and beautifully flowering shrubs. Children can romp to their heart’s content in one of the play zones. Along the picturesque Artiestenpad, you discover the beautiful Duinzoom Oosthoek, one of the few intact dune-polder transitions still remaining.

Duinzoom Oosthoek, where dunes meet polders
The old woodland belt along Duinzoom Oosthoek is home to an impressive variety of elm trees. Have you heard of the smooth-leaved elm, wych elm, Dutch elm and, most notably, the rare European white elm? In this unique dune fringe landscape, where sandy and clay-rich soils alternate and iron-rich groundwater rises close to the surface, species-rich flower meadows are thriving. The ponds and ditches provide a haven for wetland plants and protected amphibians, including the great crested newt and natterjack toad.
