Maybe you have seen them before, resting on the beach or enjoying the sun. The seals are no longer an endangered species but still a protected one.
Two species of seal can be found along the Belgian coast: the common seal and the grey seal.
Unfortunately, seals are often disturbed by humans during their rest on the beach. Resting undisturbed on the beach is very important for seals, as they need to sleep.
What do you take into account on your walks?
If you spot a seal on the beach, stay at least 30 metres away from it.
Keep your dog on a leash and keep that safe 30-metre distance.
Are you worried about the animal?
This is certainly not necessary if it is alert, lies in a banana position with its tail and head raised, has no wounds and does not growl.
