The Westhoek nature reserve
The 340 ha Westhoekreservaat is the oldest Flemish nature reserve (founded in 1957). Sea stretch, trench and parabola dunes, dune pans, grey and blond dunes, dune grasslands and calcareous marshes bear witness to a lively landscape. The area is also famous for the archaeological remains found from the Iron Age to the early Middle Ages.
Oosthoekduinen nature walk
This 60 ha domain is property of the municipality and managed by ANB as the large landscape variation is more than worth a visit. The western part belongs to the Calmeynbos (forest). The actual Oosthoekduinen comprise a dune field that is richly covered with shrubs and is surrounded by higher and lesser-formed dune ridges.
Nature walk through the Wood Dunes
The Flemish nature reserves of Houtsaegerduinen and Kerkepannebos (86ha combined) lies enclosed between De Panne and St.-Idesbald. The previously open and humid dune area has now dried out and overgrown with natural dune vegetation (shrubs and young trees). In certain places, remnants of the former grasslands and moss dunes can still be found.
Nature walk through the Cabour Domain
The dunes of Adinkerke/Ghyvelde lie like a narrow belt across the national border. The area is not freely accessible, but guided walks are regularly organised. These dunes
are the oldest on the Belgian coast. Because of the distance to the sea and the vegetation, dune formation processes no longer occur here.
Walk through the nature reserve Zwarte Hoek
The Zwarte Hoek is a sub-area of Flemish nature reserve De Duinen en Bossen van De Panne. This 20 ha wetland is an ideal place for plants to grow and an attractive leisure spot for water birds and birds looking for food or a place to rest and/or breed. Several Mute Swan couples have been returning here to nest and raise their offspring.
Nature walk through the Calmeynbos
The 66 hectares of dunes that remain, which Maurice Calmeyn gradually planted from 1903 onwards, have been listed as a protected landscape since 1935. Explore the exceptionally varied forest containing 35 tree species and an undergrowth of mainly elder, maple, a wealth of mosses, lichens and fungi together with your guide.
Exploring Garzebekeveld
Garzebekeveld consists of 25 hectares and is an offshoot of the Cabour dune belt on the French border. The transition from dune to polder area creates a unique biodiversity that differs significantly from the dune areas closer to the sea. Garzebekeveld, together with the Vijvers Markey, form a beautiful nature area.
