In an area that was marked the early days of tourism in De Panne, there is now a monumental bronze sculpture by Fernand Vanderplancke. The stylistic seagulls symbolise the freedom that is central to a holiday on the beaches of De Panne. The gulls are only connected with one another at a few points and are fixed to a pillar which is seven metres high.

Fernand Vanderplancke, born and raised in Bruges, was won over by Westhoek over thirty years ago. He is a versatile sculptor who is known for his monumental sculptures, the result of years of collaboration with his friend and tutor Jozef Petruk (Poznan - Poland).

The work of Vanderplancke translates characteristic symbolism which is sometimes primarily aggressive in form, sometimes using flowing and minimalist lines. That’s how multifaceted life can be. In contrast to some of his works, the seagulls are worth viewing from all directions.
