35. Red Cross hospital L’Océan

L'Océan

Zeedijk-Dr. Depagelaan, De Panne

L’Océan was originally a summer holiday hotel dating from 1904. Early in December 1914 the hotel was made available to the Belgian Red Cross under the impulse of professor Antoine Depage and Queen Elisabeth.

More than 24,000 injured people were taken care of in the hospital during WW I, making L’Océan the largest Belgian front hospital. The hospital consisted of a total of 46 buildings.
