19. Sand extraction

Zandwinning

Duinhoekstraat-Langeleedstraat, Adinkerke

One of the highest dunes of the coast was situated here up to WWI. Mass digging of dune sand across a surface area of 500 m2 prevented a farm and the current Duinhoekstraat from being buried under the sand. The dug up sand was used to provide several narrow-gauge railways with a levelling layer. But sand was especially necessary for the sandbags that were used to build and restore trenches.
